In addition to his business ventures, Jonathan was appointed by Governor Doug Burgum and First Lady Kathryn Burgum to serve as the Managing Director of the Office of Recovery Reinvented for the State of North Dakota, where he works to eliminate the shame and stigma of the disease of addiction throughout the state. He remains in this role today. He has been involved with numerous community initiatives in the region and across the state, including having served on the boards of directors for the UND Alumni Association and Foundation, the Grand Forks Region Economic Development Corporation, the Valley Prosperity Partnership, The Empire Arts Center, the Xcel Energy Advisory Commission, and the Grand Forks Downtown Development Association. Matt Bonzer

Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer

A native of Grand Forks, Matt has been involved in UND athletics since his very early days as a member of the Sioux Kids Club. Following a year of collegiate swimming at the University of Wisconsin, Matt transferred home to North Dakota and competed in the swimming and diving program at UND. After earning a BA in Political Science and Public Administration and his law degree from UND, Matt worked in Lima, Peru as a foreign legal consultant. Upon his return to Grand Forks, he realized that his true passion was his family’s business. He committed to carrying on his parent’s legacy, eventually taking over ownership of Bonzer’s Sandwich Pub in 2020. Matt is a firm believer in a vibrant community, serving on the board of directors of the Downtown Development Association, and supporting many local organizations focused on making Grand Forks a great place to be. Who We Are

The 1883 Collective was formed to provide name, image, and likeness opportunities for student athletes at the University of North Dakota. Our collective will give student athletes the chance to serve the community. It will also act as a connection point with local businesses for promotional purposes. Through these connections, we believe that we can significantly and positively impact Greater Grand Forks while simultaneously creating an environment for student athletes to be more successful. The 1883 Collective exists to create these opportunities in parallel with the University of North Dakota’s mission and values, ultimately creating a stronger university and a stronger state.

Who We Are Not

The 1883 Collective is not a pay for participation organization. Student athletes will not be compensated just for being athletes.

Ways That We Support Student Athletes

Community service, involvement, and engagement

We will provide and foster meaningful opportunities for student athletes to connect and serve the community, by working with verified charitable partners and community organizations.

Marketing and sponsorship opportunities

The 1883 Collective serves as a brokerage for pairing UND student athletes with businesses looking for new and exciting marketing and sponsorship opportunities featuring the name, image, and likeness of these athletes.

Mentorship and guidance

With NIL opportunities and the rules governing them constantly changing, The 1883 Collective serves as a trusted organization that can help UND’s student athletes navigate the system and help them be set up for success. Our team can help guide and mentor student athletes through building their personal brand, contract negotiations, and compliance.
